Impressive exam results for RHSC students

Last November, Reepham High School & College (RHSC) was included in the Sunday Times list of the country’s top 500 state schools. Actually, it was ranked 292nd – an impressive achievement for a non-selective secondary school.

It was within this context that GCSE pupils and A-Level students nervously opened their brown envelopes containing their examination results in late August. The school’s A-Level results were, as they have been for several years, the best in the county and even better than last year’s: 100% of all entries were at pass grade, 83% at grades A*-C and 62% at A*-B.

A large number of students gained three A*/A grades. Ruby O’Grady, for instance, gained an A* in Biology and A grades in French and Chemistry. She is starting at Oxford University to study Biological Sciences. Ruby commented: “I am thrilled to have met my offer to study at Oxford and am grateful to all the inspiring teachers at Reepham.”

Flora Langley gained two A* grades in English Literature and History and an A in Spanish. To make the most of her grades, she has decided not to go to university this year, but to reapply in light of her impressive results.

Tom Falch-Lovesey gained an A* in Chemistry and Maths, and A grades in Physics and Geography. He is going on to study Natural Sciences at Durham University, and said: “I have really enjoyed the last two years at Reepham College, both the social and the academic side. I am thankful to the great team at Reepham who have supported me to reach and exceed my goals. I will never forget the time I spent there. I am now looking forward to new challenges at Durham University.”

In fact, 30% of all Reepham College students will start at a Russell Group university reading courses from French and Linguistics to Biomedical Science. All students who sought a place at university were offered a place. (The Russell Group is an association of 24 British public research universities.)

The school’s GCSE results were also excellent. Principal Mark Farrar commented: “Our young people have achieved some magnificent results. In terms of progress made in GCSE subjects our pupils have again significantly out-performed national figures. Eleven students gained at least ten A* or A grades, but particular mention must go to Dorothea Fox, who gained 11 A* grades.”

Dorothea is studying A Levels in Spanish, History, Biology and Geography at RHSC. At university she is considering studying Geography or Human, Social and Political Sciences.

Tom Casburn gained 10 A* grades and one A grade. Tom is also studying at Reepham College and his chosen subjects are Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Geography. Beyond A levels, he hopes to study Biochemistry or Marine Biology at Southampton, and will be encouraged to pursue an Oxbridge place, as will Dorothea. The college will be supporting a number of students who will be considering applying to Oxford and Cambridge.

A special mention must be made of Robert Allen, who gained an A* grade in GCSE Maths while in Year 8. He discovered this summer that he had been awarded a grade A in AS level Mathematics. Robert was in Year 10 when he took this examination.
