Reepham remembers anniversaries of First World War dead

Since September, Reepham has been remembering the centenary anniversary of the passing of the men listed on the two First World War memorials in the two churches in the town centre.

By the memorial in St Michaels there is a book with a list of dates of each person and a separate page with more information.

So far, Reepham has remembered Ralph Frankland, John Kiddell (pictured) and Henry Wilkin, and in August will remember Herbert Rix and Frederick Bunting, both of whom died at or near Gallipoli.

Herbert died on 12 August 1915 as part of the attack on Suvla Hill, the same day as the Sandringham Regiment “disappeared”. Fred died before he got to shore after the ship he was on, the Royal Edward, was sunk by a U-boat on the night of 12/13 August 1915.

Both men are remembered on the Helles Memorial, a Commonwealth War Graves Commission war memorial near Sedd el Bahr, Turkey.

There will be an exhibition in St Michael’s on 13 August; more details will be announced nearer the time. Organiser Ron Luton-Brown is still looking for information on the men and anyone else who returned. Tel: 01603 871726 or email: roninreepham@yahoo.co.uk
