Can you identify this mystery house?

Do you recognise this house in Reepham? The arched door in the centre of the main building is quite distinctive.

The Reepham Archive is trying to help a visitor whose great grandfather, John Amiss, lived here and whose son, Edward James Amiss, was born here in 1879, so the house was obviously built before that date.

As well as John Amiss, who was a wheelwright, around this time in Hackford there were also Alfred Amiss, who was a watchmaker, and Richard Amiss, who was a grocer, draper and tailor.

By 1911, John’s son Edward James was living in Middlesex; he served in the Royal Engineers during World War I and was demobbed in 1919; as far as we know did not return to Reepham.

If you have an idea where this house might have been in Hackford, please contact the Reepham Archive through the Bircham Centre letterbox or by email: reephamarchive@gmail.com
