Meet Jambo the cycling gorilla
Congratulations to five-year-old Reuben Small of Reepham, who won the Name the Gorilla competition sponsored by Rushlight Gallery and Reepham Life.
Painted in a Tour of Britain-themed cycling jersey by local artist Mik Richardson, the baby GoGo Gorilla will be outside the gallery in Reepham’s Market Place until after the cycle race passes through the town at around 10.30 am on Saturday 12 September.
Reuben’s suggestion of “Jambo” was the first name out of the hat, and he and his family have won a takeaway pizza meal from Whitwell Station to the value of £60.
Apparently, the name Jambo originates from a story that Reuben’s father remembered from years ago about an alpha male gorilla at Jersey Zoo (now the Durrell Wildlife Park) that saved a little boy’s life when he fell into the gorilla enclosure. (The gorilla was South African and so, coincidently, is Reuben’s grandfather.)
Thanks to the more than 50 children from the Reepham area who took part in the competition.
