Building contractors blamed for damage to grass verges

Complaints have been made to Norfolk County Council about the damage to the grass verges at the corner of Kerdiston Road and Smugglers Lane, Reepham.

Silver End resident Alan Redpath told Reepham Life that during the current building of bungalows on Kerdiston Road, the constant use of the verges for parking by contractors had left deep tyre tracks on the grass, turning it into an unsightly, muddy quagmire.

He said contractors should be forced to clean up after them and repair any damage caused by heavy lorries and equipment, adding that local people need to make the County Council aware of any problems – before the contractors move away from the area so that there is no argument about who is responsible.

“I think the Council is more worried about its budget [and the cost] to put this right, which I quite understand,” said Mr Redpath. “However, I’m concerned about this kind of disrespect for our verges, which have been spoiled for locals to enjoy.

“When I worked for Bateman Groundwork, if we didn’t clear mud up or correct faults in the landscape, the company was fined. Washing the road was normal practice.”

Reepham Town Council said it has contacted the highways department at Norfolk County Council and made them aware of the situation on Kerdiston Road, adding: “Hopefully, once the houses have been completed the verge will be restored to its usual condition.”

However, other nearby residents have since contacted Reepham Life, stating that the grass verges were in this poor condition before the building contractors started on the site, claiming the damage started with work done on the water main in the road, as well as the waste and recycling bin collection vehicles driving over it every week.
