Crocus planting for polio relief

Reepham & District Rotary Club has again been planting crocuses to highlight the work the organisation is doing to eliminate polio.

The purple crocus reflects the colour of the dye used to indicate which children have been vaccinated in the developing world.

Rotary International has been working for 30 years with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to arrange mass immunisations worldwide.

Polio is now endemic in only three countries: Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. In other countries immunisation of complete communities has shown that the disease can be eradicated.

Next spring more purple flowers will be seen sprouting in the churchyard of St Michael’s Reepham as a reminder that money raised here can improve lives elsewhere.
