The event involved pupils from several Norfolk secondary schools, working in teams of four, who were set a practical task, sight unseen until the day. With limited tools and materials available they had to design and construct a solution to this real-world task, which required skills of co-operation, designing, innovating and making within a limited time.

Besides Reepham and The Hewett, other school teams were from Langley, Norwich, Taverham and Notre Dame.

The task was to design and build a cable car stable enough to carry a small weight across a ravine, and there were three levels of difficulty: the foundation level had to cross the ravine, intermediate had to cross and drop the weight, and advanced had to cross, drop and return.

The winner of the foundation level was a team from The Hewett School; the intermediate level was won by Langley School; and the advanced level was won by Norwich School.

The Mayor of Norwich, Cllr Judith Lubbock, said: “I really appreciated the opportunity to see the various groups of youngsters enjoy the challenge that was set. I say enjoy, although it was not until they tried their various solutions out and found them to work that the joy was seen on their faces.”

The event was organised jointly by the Rotary clubs of Reepham, Norwich and Norwich St Edmund, and sponsored by Rotary District 1080, KLM UK Engineering, Terry Weston and the John Jarrold Trust.

The programme and photos were by John Tym, and the event poster designed and produced by CAM Architects.
