George celebrates 25 years of bog cleaning

Reepham’s long-serving public loo-cleaner has been thanked by the Town Council – and denied rumours of her imminent retirement.

Jeanette “George” Hardiment (pictured) started cleaning the town’s public toilets in Pudding Pie Alley on 18 October 1992.

Exactly 25 years later, Town Council chairman Les Paterson, Councillor Anne Woollett and Town Clerk Jo Boxall surprised her early morning work with balloons, flowers and a gift card.

Mrs Hardiment started her job initially with Broadland District Council in 1992, continuing her work when the Town Council took over responsibility for the management of the public toilets some years later.

To celebrate her 25 years of public service she held a “bog party” with family and friends last Sunday at Stimpson’s Piece pavilion.

Mrs Boxall said “George does her job with such enthusiasm and pride and is a wonderful, kind and caring person. She is an asset to the community.”

Following rumours that the recent celebrations were because she was about to retire, Mrs Hardiment sought to put the record straight by placing a notice in the Post Office window, emphatically declaring that she has no intention of retiring.

She said she hopes to be cleaning Reepham’s toilets for another 25 years.
