Lions Club hosts virtual meetings

All of us at Reepham Lions hope you and your family and friends are well and that your lives are starting to return to the new “normal” now that the lockdown restrictions are being relaxed.

The club would especially like thank all key workers and those who have volunteered to support the more vulnerable in the community.

The introduction of the UK-wide lockdown meant that most of our members were advised to stay at home owing, which denied us the opportunity to offer support locally.

However, it was realised that the lockdown placed some of the most needy in our society at risk.

Having previously donated goods to Cromer & District Foodbank, we applied to the Lions Clubs International emergency COVID-19 relief grant for funding to support the food bank to help it continue its invaluable work in north Norfolk.

We were successful in our bid and have donated £250 to purchase such items as toiletries and household items, which their clients possibly would not have been able to afford in the current economic situation.

Our monthly meetings in St Michael’s have been cancelled and, as members were missing the opportunity to see each other (part of belonging to an organisation like the Lions), we have taken to using Zoom videoconferencing for our meetings, as well as holding quizzes.

We are not sure when we will be able to meet again so will continue like this for the foreseeable future.

I expect many people will have taken the opportunity to have a clear out of those items collected over the years that you no longer need or have a use for.

If you’ve come across any old pairs of spectacles, please take them to our collection bins, which can be found in the Bircham Centre and The Crown. Your donations have already made a difference to many less-fortunate people.

Understandably, the events at which we had planned to fundraise in 2020 have been cancelled. Therefore, Reepham Lions is not in a position to accept applications for funding for the time being, but I will let you know when this changes.

The club meets on the first Thursday of the month and if you are interested in joining one of our Zoom meetings, please contact me on liz.howes2011@gmail.com. New members are always welcome. Stay safe.
