A new public-access defibrillator has been installed outside the King’s Arms in Reepham’s Market Place, providing a vital resource for the community in the event of a cardiac emergency.
The device, purchased by Reepham Town Council and housed in a bright yellow cabinet on the pub’s exterior wall at the top of Pudding Pie Alley, is available 24/7 and can be used by anyone.
Defibrillators deliver a controlled electric shock to the heart, helping to restore a normal rhythm in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
Local residents and businesses have supported the initiative, with the King’s Arms offering its premises as a central and accessible location.
According to the town council, a local firefighter had been maintaining the defibrillator in the Market Place, outside Bank House, but it had reached the end of its life. Original Cottages is selling the building and was not interested in keeping the defibrillator there.
The installation was co-ordinated with the East of England Ambulance Service, ensuring the device is registered on the national system so emergency operators can direct callers to it immediately.
Community leaders have welcomed the move, noting that every minute counts when dealing with cardiac arrest. Statistics show survival rates can double when a defibrillator is used quickly alongside CPR.
The installation adds to Reepham’s growing network of life-saving equipment, complementing existing units at Stimpson’s Piece Community Hall and other key sites.
Residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the location of the defibrillator and remember that it is designed for use by the public, with clear voice instructions guiding users step by step.
