History teacher rebuilds high school allotment site

A history teacher has taken it upon himself to rebuild, mainly from scratch, the allotments at Reepham High School & College (RHSC).

Alongside a sprinkling of diligent A-level students, Matthew Willer has been working most Saturdays to get the site up to a working condition whereby younger children will be able to learn the skills of growing their own food.

“In this wildly consumer-driven and instantaneous culture of ours, I feel children must learn to be patient and to work with the natural environment, to respect it and develop practical skills that will stay with them forever, perhaps even inspiring others to learn to lead more sustainable lives,” said Mr Willer.

The RHSC allotment project has already received several generous donations from local firms. Great Witchingham-based farming and food products business Bernard Matthews donated a large number of wooden pallets, which have been used to build new raised beds.

Tea and coffee merchants Wilkinson’s of Norwich provided more than 30 sacks that are being used for drainage purposes in the raised beds, while facilities management provider Norse sent five tonnes of compost.
