The Reepham, Cawston & District branch of the Royal British Legion is looking for someone to act as its standard bearer for parades, memorials and celebrations.

The post of standard bearer is an important one: it is a key role on Remembrance Day when the standard is held high during the parade and proudly carried into the church to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives serving their country. The standard also comes into play at veterans’ funerals and community events.

The standard bearer can be anyone – there is no requirement for him or her to be a veteran of the armed forces. Both men and women have been Reepham’s standard bearer in the past. The post had been held until recently by Ron Luton-Brown, who has moved to Derbyshire.

Branch chairman Trevor Bevan hopes that potential volunteers for the role will come forward. “Reepham has always been good at showing respect and honouring those who have served Queen and country,” he said. “I’m sure there are people out there who would be proud to be a part of the formal acts of remembrance.”

The Royal British Legion provides training for standard bearers. Anyone interested in finding out more about the role should contact Trevor Bevan by email.

Reepham, Cawston & District’s branch was revived in April 2022 after a period as a sub-branch of Aylsham. It meets on the first Tuesday of the month at the Bircham Centre, Market Place, Reepham, at 7 pm. All are welcome to attend.
