Recreation ground set for new outdoor skatepark

Although agreement has been reached to start planning a new skatepark for Stimpson’s Piece, Reepham’s recreation ground, the facility is some way off being built.

Last week’s meeting of Reepham Town Council, which is the trustee of the Stimpson’s Piece Charity, heard that a new skatepark could cost around £100,000, but realistically could take several years before it might open.

The former skateboard park was closed last summer by the town council. Following a regular inspection, the metal ramps were judged to be unsafe as a result of persistent rust damage and deemed beyond economic repair. The skatepark was then cordoned off before being removed in October.

The town council is now seeking funding for a new, modern concrete skatepark to replace the old structure. It will need to be constructed on earth mounds and will also be repositioned further away from the existing children’s play area.

Paul Mitchell, chair, said the town council does not have all the money required to replace the skatepark and will have to seek grant funding, possibly from such bodies at the National Lottery Community Fund and Sport England. Community fundraising could also be helpful.

Town clerk Kirsty Cotgrove admitted that replacing the skatepark will be a lengthy process.

As this public sector project will cost more than £25,000 it must be listed on the government’s Contracts Finder website, with tendering still ongoing, she said.

Following the closing date and once a contractor has been selected, hopefully by the end of the year, the town council plans to discuss design ideas with local youths who would use the skatepark.

Following the design phase, planning permission will be required from Broadland District Council before construction work can commence.

Parents of children who would like to be involved in the design process and/or fundraising are invited to contact Reepham Town Council by email or telephone 01603 873355.
