The Norfolk Coffee Company recently purchased an electric van for deliveries and all its retail packaging is fully compostable, as are the cups used in the coffee shop.

The roastery is located in a 500-year-old barn on a historic estate, with much of the land on which the farm is now situated once owned by the Boleyn family.

Founder and head roaster Steve Perrett said: “We are doing more and more wholesale deliveries around Norfolk and we always felt we could do more to reduce our environmental impact, so we made the decision to purchase an electric van in which to do our local deliveries.

“While we don’t claim to change the world with our business, we are dedicated to doing our best for the environment and ensuring coffee farmers are paid a good price for their produce.

“We ethically source the best beans possible, ensuring there is complete traceability back to the farmer and even the field in which the beans were grown.”

Mr Perrett’s love affair with coffee began many years ago, during a year living and working in southern Germany.

He avoids automation and instead roasts each batch by hand, carefully tracking temperature, air pressure, drum speed and even the effect of the weather. A new Giesen W15A roaster (nicknamed “Sally”) is used to precision-roast a range of single-origin beans from small, traceable farms and producers.

There are beans suitable for filter coffee as well as coffee for espresso; decaffeinated beans are also available.

The company’s house blend is “1549”, named after the year of Kett’s Rebellion when Norfolk peasants rose up against wealthy landowners over land enclosure. This Brazilian/Peruvian mix has tasting notes of milk chocolate, caramel, hazelnut and orange.

As well as online sales, the roastery is open one or two days a week for drink-in coffees and retail purchases; check the website for details.
