Reepham & Salle Cricket Club senior team match reports, July 2022

Saturday 2 July

The First XI travelled to Thornham for a tough game. Batting first, the home side scored 209-7, skipper Raj the pick of the bowlers with 2-38. In response, the RSCC batters couldn’t get going and, despite a gutsy 80 from Will Hollis, lost by 21 runs.

The Second XI also tasted defeat against a strong Hardingham side. Put into bat, RSCC were bowled out for 162, the only score of note 42 from Gary Hinchliffe. Hardingham reached the target five down inside 31 overs, Matt Waller and Nathan Raines with a couple of wickets each.

Saturday 9 July

After a couple of poor weeks on the road, the first team returned to home action against an in-form Saham Toney side. Batting first, RSCC posted 288-7. At 160-6, a score of that size looked in doubt, but Tristan Peters hit an exceptional unbeaten 120. He was well supported by Roo Hollis with 35 to put on 99 for the seventh wicket to post a good score. In reply, Saham Toney came out of the blocks hard, but some creative captaincy and tight bowling saw us take regular wickets that ensured the target was never in sight for the visitors. James Hardy bowled exceptionally, opening the bowling with his spin and taking 3-27 from his 10 overs. Toby Peters cleaned up the tail with 4-16.

The second team were less successful away to Hockwold. Batting first, they posted 178-7 from their 45 overs. A first half-century of the season for Archie Gibbs (59) well deserved after some good starts throughout the season. In response, Hockwold managed to chase down the target six down, with plenty of overs to spare.

Saturday 16 July

The First XI made the long trip to Snettisham, where they were put into bat by the hosts. Regular wickets fell, and the only real contribution of note was Will Allen’s 44 as we were bowled out for 156. In reply, Snettisham reached the target five wickets down. Another disappointing result, but always time to put things right next week.

Better news for the Second XI, as they were victorious at home to Great Ellingham. A good toss to win saw Billy’s boys batting first. Superb centuries from Harry Brown (120) and Gary Hinchliffe (114) saw us post 281-3. In reply, some excellent opening bowling in the first 20 overs from Mark Lester (4-30) and Oliver Kerkham (1-24) meant the target was never in reach for the opposition, who were eventually bowled out for 163 with big Andy Matley (3-22) clearing up the tail.

Saturday 23 July

The First XI were back at home and looking to bounce back against Sandringham after a mixed run of results. Batting first, RSCC piled on 330-5 with Tristan Peters scoring an unbeaten 127, his second hundred of the month. He was well supported by Dani Long Martinez, who hit an entertaining 75 from 46 balls. In reply, Sandringham never attempted to chase down the total and were eventually bowled out in the last over for 194. Spinners James Hardy (3-43) and Tristan Peters (3-13) did the bulk of the damage to secure a 136-run win.

The Second XI were awarded full points with the opposition conceding, and came along to heckle the First XI from the side-lines.

Saturday 30 July

The First XI travelled to table-topping Castle Acre in the toughest fixture of the season so far. The impressive Castle Acre bowling unit stemmed the scoring and took regular wickets. A patient and composed 86 from Toby Peters helped get us over 200 and set the opponents 207 to win. In reply, some excellent bowling reduced the home side to 111-6, the irrepressible James Hardy taking 3-25 to shift the game in our favour. However, some brutal late-order hitting from the opponents took the game into the penultimate over and they reached the total eight wickets down. A good effort from the boys but ultimately not enough against a very strong opposition.

The Second team were more successful at home to Swaffham. Batting first, they scored 255-8 from their 45 overs, Matt Waller (60) bringing up his first half-century for the club the highlight. After a delicious traditional cricket tea (a nice change since Covid scuppered the tradition), the bowlers were in fine fettle and demolished the Swaffham batting line-up like they had their sandwiches and cakes, with Nathan Raines (4-29) and Gary Hinchliffe (3-29) doing most of the damage to both the scorecard and to the leftovers to secure a 103-run win.

Another mixed month for our senior sides, with glimpses of potential offset by some poor performances. August is the final month of the league calendar and both teams go into it hoping to secure mid-table finishes.

Reepham and Salle Cricket Club – May/June updates

1st and 2nd Saturday Teams – Norfolk Cricket League Divisions 1W and 2W

May

It was a tricky start to the season for the club, with multiple absences owing to university, A-level and GCSE exams. However, the club pulled together to field full sides in every game, pulling players from retirement and with many more helping out to ensure the games could go ahead.

After a difficult start, with both the first and second teams losing their first two league games, fortunes began to turn, with the first team winning four games in a row.

The highlight of the season so far without doubt was Dani Long-Martinez scoring a club record 228 in the game against Snettisham, with a monstrous 21 fours and 18 sixes. Rarely has Salle seen anything as destructive, with his innings helping the side to a mammoth 379-7 and a 146-run victory.

Runs have been plentiful at Salle, on some great batting tracks served up by head groundsman, Joe Hollis, making for entertaining cricket.

June

Saturday 4 June

A weekend of mixed fortunes for the Churches. The First XI won at home to Felthorpe, while the Second XI came up short in their visit to Drayton.

Batting first, the First XI amassed 343/7, with Toby Armiger (87), Will Allen (87) and Tristan Peters (80) scoring the bulk of the runs.

Tristan cemented his man-of-the-match performance (even if he will have to wait three years to be able to legally drink his man-of-the-match beer) with three wickets (3-24) in the second innings, with James Hardy (3-49) delivering another great 10-over spell on an unforgiving pitch for the bowlers, bowling Felthorpe out for 212.

Over at Drayton, the Second XI’s 149 all out (Archie Gibbs top scoring with 33) proved not to be enough, despite the valiant efforts of Nathan Raines, whose wily spin returned figures of 4-33.

Saturday 11 June

At the weekend, the First XI slipped to defeat away at Wensum. A poor batting performance saw us bowled out for 114, Will Allen (35) and Harrison Atkinson (25 n.o.) helping post a modest target after being reduced to 43-5.

In reply, Wensum made hard work of the total, but reached it six wickets down and were much the better side on the day. Nathan Raines followed up his four-for from the week before on the same ground with 3-29, his flight and guile almost dragging us back into the contest.

Much better fortunes for the Second XI, who reached 289-3 batting first at home against Beeston. All batters got starts but it was the strong finish from singer/songwriter turned cricketer Sam Smith (74 n.o.) who asked veteran Paul Harwood (75 n.o.) to “stay with me” to pile on the runs.

In reply, Beeston made a good start, but the hero of the day went from “Rockstar to Rockhard” with the ever-dependable Gary Hinchliffe bagging 5-53 to win the game and to prove to Sam that he’s “not the only one” who was going to win a man-of-the-match beer in a fine victory.

Midweek and friendly teams

The midweek and friendly teams have been busy in action over the past few weeks. The T20 team have racked up 641 runs across three games this season, proving a hard side to beat.

7 June

Aldborough were beaten at the Salle Cricket Ground (SCG), RSCC’s 221-4 –– Toby Armiger (88), George Wright (44) –– proving too steep a task for the opposition (118-5; Tom Griffin 2-17).

10 June

The SCG hosted a T20 friendly against touring side Oundle Ramblers, played on a beautiful summer’s evening in a great spirit.

While the result mattered not, it was great to see everyone’s favourite ice cream man Jack Austin with an unbeaten 50 and two wickets to his name to help win the game for the Churches.

Special thanks to the chuckle brothers, Billy and Nathan, for firing up the BBQ and keeping everyone well fed and watered.

12 June

The friendly side were once again in action, fielding a team of talented youngsters against a very strong Bircham side. Using nine bowlers in total, including some impressive spells from Elliot A, Theo L and Louis M, the visiting side posted 283.

With the target proving ultimately a bit much, RSCC posted 252 all out, with the returning Rob Allen stroking a glorious 113 to remind us of what we are all missing as well as cementing himself as the superior Allen at the club (excluding Trev of course).

15 June

RSCC racked up 219-4 away to Felthorpe – Toby Armiger (75), George Harad (42 n.o.) – who in return could only muster 110-9 off their 20 overs; Tom Fisher with 3-9 opening up, which meant the home side never got going.

Over 40s

Elliot Marks’ band of merry (old) men have continued to impress, sitting at the top of the Over 40s league table after seven games and five wins.

With five out of the top 10 run scorers in the league, including an in-form and yet to be dismissed Jo Kerkham sitting at the top, the batting unit is not one to be messed with.

Not letting up on the bowling front, Jonny Bundock tops the league bowling stats with 8/96 across the 20 overs he’s bowled so far.

Red Rose FC back in training

Cawston Red Rose Football Club (girls and women) is back to training on Thursdays – juniors 5–7 pm; women 7–8.30 pm – at Cawston Church of England Primary Academy, Aylsham Road, Cawston.

Players are needed for all teams. If you want to get back into football, just come along, even if you have never played but just want to give it a go and improve your fitness at the training sessions.

Red Rose girls pleased to be back to training

The girls’ teams of Cawston Red Rose FC have been itching to get back to football for weeks and, along with everyone else, are glad to now be able to enjoy team games, all be it with some strict precautions still being taken.

Many of the girls have been getting their kit ready for our restart.

The club is limiting training to just once a week, on Saturday mornings initially, and will reassess this when our Thursday evening training can start up again.

There will need to be some seriously intensive sessions as league football is planned to resume on 17 April for all Red Rose teams.

Wildcats fun training sessions for the younger girls, age six years upwards, have also restarted on Saturday mornings and will run alongside the older girls’ team training.

We are now happy to accept any new girls wishing to have a try at girls-only football.

Red Rose girls in snow football challenge

With the lack of sport resulting in players having to be content with weekly quizzes and competitions, the recent snowfall gave the Red Rose FC managers the chance to issue a new challenge to players: to roll the biggest snow football possible.

As the club caters for players from ages 6 to 13, the challenge was judged against the height of each player, which meant the older, taller girls would need to roll bigger snow footballs.

The girls sent in photos of themselves with their snowballs. At the end of the week the winner was Jessie with a snow football taller than herself (pictured).

The runners-up were Sahara, Nelly and Elise, all with a football up to chin level, with Aimee winning the cleanest/whitest snow football prize.

It was all great fun and a brilliant way to get the players outside in fresh air again. Hopefully, we will now be back playing soon.

Girls’ football club to benefit from lottery support

Cawston Red Rose Football Club is hoping to benefit from the Broadland Community at Heart Lottery.

The club provides a football opportunity for girls in the Reepham district from ages 7 to 13 and is the sole “girls only” football club in the area.

Red Rose is a Football Association charter standard club providing an opportunity for girls to play in the local district at any skill level.

Along with most voluntary organisations the club has been hit hard over the past year from a lack of funds and is hoping the new local lottery set up by Broadland District Council will help fill the gap.

A minimum of 50% of all tickets purchased will directly benefit the club. Tickets for the lottery cost just £1 per week, with a top prize of £25,000, as well as prizes of £2,000, £250 and £25. The first draw will take place on 27 February.

Red Rose girls win out in tight game

The last match the Cawston Red Rose FC girls were able to play before the latest lockdown was a typical match of two halves, as they welcomed visitors from Lowestoft: Waveney FC.

The girls had previously had a few matches cancelled due to the current situation so were pleased to have a game go ahead at last on what turned out to be a perfect day.

The Waveney team started strongly, forcing several corners that were all defended well by Red Rose, with keeper Darcie not much troubled.

As Red Rose settled into the game the pressure lifted and it became more evenly matched, with the home team creating a few more chances in and around the Waveney goal area.

Waveney then surprised Red Rose with a quick break down the left with the wide player outpacing all others and smashing the ball in to take a 1-0 lead.

This was soon followed by another goal and, with an uplift in confidence, the game tipped in favour of Waveney.

Despite the Waveney dominance Red Rose managed to get a goal back with a lovely taken effort by Jasmine.

However, the Waveney team continued to dominate and just before half time a strike from a Waveney player took a wicked deflection and ended up in the net to give a half time score of Red Rose 1 Waveney 3.

The Red Rose girls came out after half time in a different and determined frame of mind and totally took the match to Waveney, pressuring the ball at all times. The effect was immediate with a well-taken goal scored by team captain Hetty.

The pressure continued with Jasmine hitting her second and the Red Rose team’s third goal of the day to bring the scores level.

With Red Rose now controlling the game the girls finally took the lead when Casey shot on target from the edge of the goal area, before Paige put the game to bed with a tap in from almost on the goal line after more Red Rose pressure.

Final score: Red Rose 5 Waveney 3.

Christmas match with a difference

With the delayed start of football this season, the league had scheduled games for the last Saturday leading up to Christmas, which are normally left free of matches – it was looking like we were not going to be able to hold our usual Christmas parents vs girls football match.

However, one by one each of our opponents cancelled the matches arranged for that Saturday, which meant a hastily arranged (almost) traditional parents’ match.

With the current restrictions in place all activities took place outside and the usual food and drink was not allowed; all parents and players had to be temperature-checked on arrival.

To make it different we played three-ball football with different coloured balls for the various age young players, all playing on one massive pitch, but all scores counting towards the final match result.

The parents’ team took an early lead in (as expected) a high scoring match and were ahead 8-6 by half time. However, with the mums’ and dads’ fitness (or lack of) beginning to tell in the second half, the girls ended up as 13-11 winners in this epic match.

After another massive use of the hand sanitisers the girls finished off the fun day with a snowball fight, most of which ended up being lobbed at the squad coaches, but all in the name of great fun.

Entertaining match against table-topping Taverham

Before the current lockdown the girls’ football season was finally able to get going, despite the Covid-19 delay to most sports, with football able to continue with extra safeguards in place.

An understrength Cawston Red Rose Football Club side kicked off the season with a closely contested match at home against a top-of-the-table Taverham team.

Taverham started brightly and showed why they are a top team with several promising attacking moves that could have produced some goals, but for some great saves from goalkeeper Hannah, who was in top form, as well as the opposition strikers being less than clinical in their finishing.

Despites these early scares the Red Rose girls battled on and slowly got into the game as midfield trio Jazzy, Millie and Paige began to control more of the ball and created chances for striker Casey to run onto.

The rest of the first half was more evenly contested until just before the half-time whistle when Taverham at last managed to beat keeper Hannah to take a 1-0 lead.

A change of formation by Red Rose for the second half saw a new goalkeeper and a revamp at the back, but Taverham had at last found their shooting boots and despite several good saves by keeper Hetty, Taverham moved into a 3-0 lead.

However, heads did not drop and Red Rose hit back with Hannah, now playing as a striker, pulling one goal back with a brilliant run from a feed in by Elise and then smashing the ball into the net.

Shortly after, Hannah scored again from a brilliantly taken free kick to bring the score to 3-2 and the chase was on to get an equaliser.

With Hetty keeping all the shots out at one end and Red Rose pushing hard for an equaliser the match went from end to end until Taverham managed to make the game safe with a fourth goal, which made the final score Red Rose girls 2, Taverham girls 4.

The player of the match was deservedly given to Hannah, but each player contributed brilliantly towards what was an excellent result against the top team.

Most importantly, the whole team had an enjoyable match, with our opponents proving to be a great team and perfect guests.

 Red Rose girls’ teams are still open to all players, of any skill level, in school years 7 and 8 and also years 3 and 4.
