Uncertainty over future of Royal British Legion branch

The future of the Reepham, Cawston & District Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) is uncertain and a meeting is to be held to decide its fate.

The RBL is a national organisation that is widely support by many members of the local community – the 2022 Poppy Appeal in the Reepham area alone received donations of more than £3,000.

Although there are more than 20 members in the branch, it is struggling to attract people who are prepared to become actively involved in the operation of the branch through its committee, which would enable it to provide key services to the Reepham and Cawston areas.

These include support for veterans in the local area and at the RBL’s care home, Halsey House in Cromer, as well as ceremonial acts of remembrance and attendance at funerals, where invited.

The branch recently resolved to move to quarterly meetings rather than monthly, and plans to hold a decisive meeting at 7 pm on Wednesday 12 April in the Bircham Centre, Market Place, Reepham, where the branch’s future will be discussed and a decision made.

Branch chairman Trevor Bevan is appealing for anyone who is an existing or prospective member of the RBL to come along to the meeting.

“We are looking for people who would be prepared to be actively involved,” he said. “I suspect there are people in our area, with or without forces experience who were not aware of our existence until now, who would be willing to get involved.

“It would be sad to lose the branch now if there is support in the area for its continuation,” said Mr Bevan, who hopes the potential closure of the branch will prompt people to get in touch.

The Reepham, Cawston & District Branch has been in existence for 121 years, making it one of the oldest branches in the county.
