Memory café celebrates first anniversary

The Sunshine Café for people with memory loss and their carers was set up in September 2021 by Reepham & District Rotary Club after extensive research.

It has shown a steady growth in attendance and a healthy roster of volunteers to keep things running smoothly.

There is no membership, fees or bookings; visitors just turn up on the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 10 am at St Michael’s, Reepham. A carefully chosen range of activities ensures there is something for everyone.

A highlight is the seated Pilates on the second Thursday of the month: light exercise and co-ordination is fun for all – and challenges some of the volunteers as well. A singalong with the ukulele band is also popular.

Throughout the morning there are board games, puzzles and the opportunity for a good natter and exchange of information.

Coffee and biscuits are provided by the local Co-op and cakes are made by many of the volunteers.

Peter Williams, who has led the team from the start, said: “We have been very pleased with the reception the café has had.

“The idea is to create a relaxed and informal atmosphere where people can be comfortable in familiar surroundings. Everyone seems to enjoy themselves and they keep coming back.”

The memory café’s first anniversary was celebrated at the meeting on 8 September with nine friends and their carers, together with 13 volunteers, all enjoying tea and coffee with sausage rolls, cakes and cheese straws, as well as the regular games and chat.

The next meetings are 22 September, 13 October, 27 October, 10 November and 24 November from 10 am – 12 noon.
